Introducción:
Es bien conocido que un manejo adecuado del período seco es importante para lograr una buena producción de leche en la siguiente lactancia y que la ausencia de período seco está asociada a mermas en la producción de leche (Smith et al., 1966; Swanson, 1965). En nuestro país, los animales se encuentran en contacto directo con el medio, y gran parte del rodeo lechero nacional tiene su período seco durante los meses de verano lo cual podría predisponerlos a estrés por calor. El estrés calórico en el período seco, afectaría el consumo de MS preparto (Adin et al., 2009; do Amaral et al., 2009) aunque no se ha evidenciado que afecte ni el peso vivo ni la condición corporal alcanzados por los animales (Collier et al., 1982; Wolfenson et al., 1988; Avendaño-Reyes et al., 2006). Sin embargo, se han registrado menores pesos de los terneros al nacimiento (Collier et al., 1982; Wolfenson et al., 1988; Tao et al., 2006; Adin et al., 2009; do Amaral et al., 2009) y cambios en la composición del calostro (menor concentración de inmunoglobulinas (IgG y IgA), grasa, proteína) (Nardone et al., 1997). Además se ve repercutida la producción de leche de la lactancia posterior (Tao et al., 2006; Urdaz et al., 2006; Wolfenson et al., 1988; Avendaño-Reyes et al., 2006; Avendaño Reyes et al., 2007; Adin et al., 2009; do Amaral et al., 2009) y la composición y producción de sólidos en leche (Avendaño-Reyes et al., 2006; Tao et al., 2006; Avendaño reyes et al., 2007; Adin et al., 2009). Tanto a nivel nacional como regional los trabajos que estudian el efecto adverso de estés por calor durante este período son nulos y escasos respectivamente, lo que amerita un estudio en nuestras condiciones climáticas que podrían clasificarse como condiciones diferentes de donde proviene la mayor información. La hipótesis sobre la que trabajamos es que el estrés por calor en el período seco afectaría negativamente el desarrollo del feto, la composición del calostro y el desempeño productivo en la lactancia posterior. El objetivo de trabajo es evaluar el efecto del acceso a sombra artificial durante el período seco sobre el desarrollo del feto, la composición del calostro, y el desempeño productivo de la lactancia posterior de animales Hostein. We tested the hypothesis that supplementation with cracked maize during the last week of pregnancy would provide ewes with a substrate for glucose and enhance the synthesis of lactose and, consequently, their production of colostrum. Thirty single- and 30 twin-bearing ewes were fed lucerne hay and half of each group was supplemented daily with 0.75 kg per head cracked maize during the last week of pregnancy. Colostrum production and the endocrine patterns in the animals were investigated. Supplementation with maize more than doubled the mass of colostrum available at birth in unsupplemented ewes: 339 v. 145 g in single-bearing ewes and 536 v. 197 g in twin-bearing ewes (P < 0.001). The total colostrum produced in the 10 h after birth was also significantly increased by supplementation: 730 v. 475 g in single-bearing ewes and 1259 v. 631 g in twin-bearing ewes (P < 0.01). The colostrum in the supplemented ewes was also more liquid with a viscosity score of 5.8 compared with 5.7 and 4.5 in unsupplemented single- and twin-bearing ewes (P < 0.01). Supplemented ewes had higher concentrations of lactose in their colostrum at parturition (2.6% v. 1.8% in single-bearing ewes and 2.5% v. 1.4% in twin-bearing ewes; P < 0.01). The plasma concentrations of progesterone and growth hormone in supplemented ewes were lower, whereas those of IGF-I and insulin were higher, all consistent with a higher capacity to produce colostrum. It is concluded that a high-energy supplement, like maize, fed to ewes in the last week of gestation increases their capacity to produce colostrum for their lambs, particularly for ewes bearing twins.
